Jürgen completed his PhD on fluid-rock interaction in shear zones on King Island, Tasmania, at the Australian National University in Canberra in 1994 and lectured in structural geology and geomechanics at the University of Giessen, Germany (1994-1997). His research involved studies of the structural evolution of Alpine basement and modelling of crustal strength. He also investigated fluid-assisted faulting in shear experiments on rock analogue materials and modelled effects of pore fluid pressure on the seismic behaviour of faults during research appointments at the University of Newcastle (1997) and the Australian National University (1998-2000).

Jürgen joined the NCPGG in 2000 and currently develops methods for predicting induced fault reactivation and reservoir failure during hydrocarbon field depletion and fluid injection. He conducts in situ stress determinations and estimates maximum sustainable fluid pressures for underground CO2 injection within the APCRC GEODISC research program for the geological storage of carbon dioxide. Other research topics include earthquake mechanics and seismic hazard assessment.
